Choosing to have an abortion is not an easy decision. The anxiety and fear beforehand consume you. It’s hard enough to share that you’re facing an unwanted pregnancy, much less that you’re planning to abort. You don’t know who to talk to or whose advice to take.

You play out a hundred different scenarios in your head. “Maybe God will just naturally cause me to miscarry.” “What if I don’t abort and try to raise the baby?” “I want to wake up from this nightmare and find out that it’s all just a bad dream.”

I can’t tell if this is God’s will and he wants me to have a fourth [child] and surrender. I on the other hand want to give my three children the fullest life possible. We are a family of 5 on one income. Things are tight now as is. But do I trust God to provide? Is it okay to choose myself for once? To not do this again or am I shedding innocent blood? Will God forgive me or am I going to Hell? Because I know the choice I’m making.”  – An Anonymous Christian Reddit User

The abortion debate is not only about the physical act, but also about the spiritual and emotional consequences. If you believe in God, you want His will for your life, but in the same token, you’re looking at your circumstances.

God Gives Us Free Will

God did not create us to be puppets dangling on strings that He controls. He gave clear directions to Adam in the garden. “And the Lord God commanded the man, ‘You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die.’” Genesis 2:16-17.

You are free to…” make whatever choice you want. God does not coerce people to love him or reject him. He lets them choose. Genuine love can only exist when we have the freedom to choose.

We are free to decide between good and evil, right and wrong, and virtue or sin. As you thought about abortion, God gave you the freedom to decide for yourself. If it is your will to have an abortion, He won’t stop you from doing so.

“Today I have given you the choice between life and death, between blessings and curses. Now I call on heaven and earth to witness the choice you make. Oh, that you would choose life, so that you and your descendants might live!”  Deuteronomy 30:19.

You Are Not Alone

Research shows that anywhere from 62% to 70% of women who have had abortions identify as women of faith, mostly Christian. Women facing an unplanned pregnancy may feel they will experience judgment or condemnation from their church if they continue their pregnancies.

In the same survey, only 38% of women who have had an abortion consider the church a safe place to discuss their pregnancies or options. The church has sadly created a culture of silence.
