If you’ve taken the abortion drugs and are struggling with what happened, you may be wondering why the experience affected you so deeply.
Perhaps you weren’t prepared for the intensity of the pain. Maybe you were surprised by how much bleeding there was. Perhaps you saw your baby during the process, and that image has stayed with you ever since. Or maybe you can’t explain why you feel the way you do, but you just know something changed after that day.
If any of this describes your experience, please know you’re not alone.
Every woman’s abortion experience is different, but many women who have taken the abortion pill report not feeling prepared for what they experienced, especially because it often takes place at home rather than in a medical setting. Understanding why the abortion pill can affect women differently may also help you understand why your experience has been so difficult to process.
Below are some of the most common reasons that women report feeling traumatized by their experience after taking the abortion pill. Hearing from others can help you know you’re not alone. And so can talking to someone who understands. At Choices, we understand what you’re going through because we’ve been there. We’re here for you, with one-on-one or group support and other resources, because we want you to know that hope and healing are possible.
The Physical Pain Can Be More Intense Than Some Women Expect
A medical abortion involves two abortion drugs: mifepristone and misoprostol. After taking the second drug, the uterus contracts to expel the pregnancy. This causes vaginal bleeding and abdominal cramping, but many women are not prepared for the pain. Some women have reported feeling “out of this world pain,” like going into labor but without adequate pain relief.
One woman shared online:
“The cramps worsened… I was all alone… I even prayed.”
Another wrote:
“I literally gave birth, and nobody told me it would be like that. The contractions were so intense that it was unbearable.”
For some women, the pain itself becomes part of the trauma. If you felt frightened, overwhelmed, or unprepared by what your body experienced, those feelings are understandable, and you’re not alone in them.
Seeing the Baby Can Leave Lasting Emotional Wounds
Another reason some women describe the abortion pill as traumatic is that they unexpectedly saw the fetus during the abortion.
Because a medical abortion takes place at home, women see the blood clots, tissue, and sometimes the embryo or fetus. Depending on how far along the pregnancy was, some women report seeing recognizable features they weren’t expecting.
One woman wrote:
“I saw the fetus and I haven’t been okay since… I think I’m genuinely traumatized.”
Another shared:
“I didn’t expect to see its little tiny toes and hands… It’s completely made me feel rock bottom.”
If seeing your baby left you with images or memories that are difficult to forget, you’re not alone. Many women have shared similar experiences and have needed time and support to begin processing what happened.
Experiencing an Abortion at Home Can Feel Isolating
One of the biggest differences between a medical abortion and a surgical abortion is where the experience takes place.
With a medical abortion, the abortion drugs are typically taken at home. The cramping, vaginal bleeding, and expulsion of the pregnancy happen wherever you are. Some women have someone beside them throughout the process, while others go through it entirely alone.
A surgical abortion, on the other hand, takes place in a clinical location away from home. Depending on the procedure, many women receive local anesthesia, sedation, or anesthesia during the abortion and do not feel or see what’s happening.
Because a medical abortion often happens over many hours, and sometimes more than a day, some women say they felt isolated as they experienced the physical and emotional realities of the abortion. If that was your experience, it’s understandable if those memories still affect you today.
Whatever you’re feeling now, whether it’s grief, regret, sadness, numbness, anger, or something you can’t quite put into words, your emotions deserve to be acknowledged. Healing begins when you allow yourself to be honest about what you’ve experienced.
